The nation's best-loved baby names in 2023 have been revealed and one name is making a name for itself across the country.

Despite stiff competition coming from the name 'Liam' in 2024, Jack has retained its top spot for another year to be named Ireland's top boys' baby name for the past seven years in a row.

The longtime favourite which came to prominence in Medieval England, is thought to be of Celtic origin, and means 'God is Gracious.'

Not only has Jack managed to cling to the top spot but it's also the most popular choice in ten counties including Cork, Waterford, Wexford, Wicklow, Carlow, Kilkenny, Tipperary, Offaly, Leitrim, and Donegal.

Jack is also top-of-the pops in Dublin City, Galway County, and the joint top name choice for boys in Meath.

Rounding out the top five boys' names in 2023 were Noah, James, Rían, and Oisin but the list also included Caelan which proved to be the fastest growing boys' name of the year.

Moving on to the girls and in a turn up for the books the CSO data has revealed that only one traditional Irish name made the top five.

The top spot went to Grace which means 'blessing' and was also the most popular name in Tipperary, Kilkenny, Laois, Offaly, Kildare, Meath and Leitrim as well as being joint top name in Dublin city Kerry, Limerick county Donegal,

Nipping at Grace's heels is the Irish name Fiadh meaning 'wildness' followed by Emily, Sophie and Lily.

While Irish names might not have dominated the top five in 2023, the trend is still going strong with Síofra named as the fastest-rising girls' name in 2023.
