Materials Needed: Sensory table or container filled with sensory material (rice, dried corn, birdseed, sand, dried beans, etc.) Add seasonal trinkets from a craft or dollar store for more interest.

May Sensory Bin Unit with Recording Sheets – Carnival

1] Balloons – Counting Mats 0-20 – Choose, Count, Pick, Match, Dig, Find, Count, Color, Write – Choose a counting mat and count the number of balloons. Pick a balloon number. If it matches, put it by the mat. If it doesn’t, try again. Dig around in the sensory bin for counters. Count them onto the mat, matching the number. Color the matching numbered balloon on the coloring sheet. Write the number on the recording sheet. Repeat with another mat.

2] Carnival Games – Set Matching 0-20 – Choose, Count, Pick, Count, Match, Pick, Match, Color, Write – Choose a bottle toss game. Count the bottles. Pick a duck pond game to match (counting tally marks). Pick a spinner game. If the number matches, put it with the bottle toss and duck pond. If it doesn’t, pick another. Match 3 games. Color the matching numbered bottle on the coloring sheet. Write the number on the recording sheet. Repeat with another match.

3] Waiting In Line – Number Order and Stack 0-20 – Pick, Order, Count, Stack, Trace or Write – Pick a card out of the bin. Line them up in numerical order. Dig for interlocking cubes. Count and stack the cubes next to each number. Complete a cut and glue follow up sheet.

4] Pirate Ship Ride – Fine Motor Count and Color 0-10 OR 0-20 – Choose, Count, Pick, Match, Tweeze, Transfer, Count, Color – Choose a pirate ship ride card. Count the dots. Pick a card out of the bin. If the number matches, put it by the ship ride. If it doesn’t, put it back and pick another. Use tweezers or tongs to transfer that many gold pieces (yellow pompoms) on the ride card. Color the coin number on the coloring sheet.

5] Ticket Booth – Shape Sorting (3 levels) – Pick, Identify, Dig, Find, Sort, Color, Snip, Glue – Pick a ticket booth. Identify the shape or shape word. Dig around for the matching shape tickets. Sort by the ticket booth. Complete a snip and stick follow up sheet.

6] Ice Cream Carts – Fine Motor Color Sorting (2 levels) – Pick, Identify, Grasp, Transfer, Sort, Color, Write – Pick a cart. Identify the color. Use tweezers or tongs to transfer matching colored ice cream scoops (pompoms) on the cart. Color the numbered scoop the same color. Write the color word.

7] Roller Coaster – Short U Word Families (4 sets, 20 cvc words total) (ub, ug, um, un) – Pick, Identify, Dig, Find, Pick, Read, Match, Color, Write – Pick a hand stamp strip. Identify the picture and missing beginning letter. Dig around in the sensory bin for a hand stamp with the matching letter. Put it on the strip. Pick a coaster car. Read the word. If it matches, put it by the strip. If it doesn’t, put it back and pick another. Find the word on the coloring sheet and color the hand stamp. Write the word by the matching number.

8] Fries and Ketchup – Letter Order – Pick, Dig, Find, Match, Trace or Write – Pick uppercase french fries. Line them up in alphabetical order. Dig for lowercase ketchup packets. Match uppercase to lowercase. Trace or write the letters in order on a follow up sheet.

9] Bumper Cars – Upper, Lower, Beg. Sounds Match – Pick, Match 3, Color, Write – Pick and match 2 bumper cars and 1 ‘bump’. Color the matching bump symbol. Write the letter.

10] Fair Food Friends – Visual Discrimination and Memory – Pick, Match, Color – Pick a food friend. Pick another one. If they don’t match, replace them and try again. If they do match, leave them out of the bin and color the matching pal. Repeat with another pair until all matches are paired and colored.
